Smog-related registration help

A missing smog certificate is one of the most common reasons a renewal or sale stalls. We help you understand what’s required and keep the registration moving.

Highland Auto Registration is a private business, not the California DMV. These services are also available directly at dmv.ca.gov.

Needed for renewal

Your renewal notice says “smog certification required.” We help you figure out what’s needed, point you to the next step, and complete the registration once the certificate is in.

What to bring

Tick items off as you gather them. Exact requirements depend on your vehicle and situation — we confirm everything when you book.

What can delay it

  • Smog not yet performed before the due date.
  • Check-engine light or failed readiness monitors.
  • Failed test and repairs needed.
  • Certificate expired before filing — they’re valid for a limited time.

Frequently asked questions

Does Highland Auto Registration perform smog inspections?

Smog inspections are done by licensed smog check stations. Our role is to guide you through the registration side and keep your paperwork moving. Ask us about options near you.

Are any vehicles exempt from smog?

Yes — certain newer vehicles, older vehicles and electric vehicles are exempt from the regular check. Newer gasoline vehicles may owe a smog abatement fee instead. We’ll confirm yours.

How long is a smog certificate valid?

They’re valid for a limited time (commonly 90 days) so timing matters. We’ll help you time it.

What if I can’t pass?

There may be options, including state repair assistance or retirement programs for those who qualify. We’ll help you explore the next steps.

Is the smog fee part of your price?

No. Smog station fees and DMV smog-related fees are separate from our service fee.
